This is the first session with all party members participating. Victor did not participate for the majority of the game, but he is only 4 so it’s understandable. First thing, K’un-Lun and Professor needed to catch up to Surina and the rest of the party. The script Cordelia had written (see Session 4) included instructions how to get her uncles caught up.
The purple meteor came and fell, causing a big commotion in Dalvok. Surina left in the middle of the night, leaving a note for K’un-Lun stating she was going to visit the temple.
Letter to K’un-Lun: K’un-Lun, I feel the meteorite means something and I am going to the temple to find out.
K’un-Lun: Well I am the great K’un-Lun, it’s only natural that everyone’s going to want my help because I am so cool and strong and from the past. *shows Professor the letter*
Professor: What’s this? *pulls his goggles down, which magnifies his eyes, and reads the letter* I guess this means I can go, too?
K’un-Lun: Yeah, you can come along. I know I’m an amazing hero and everything, but I feel my powers are not what they used to be.
Professor: Yes, yes, Klun Lun.
K’un-Lun: Let’s go, you oaf. *goes to temple*
DM: On your way to the temple you run in to Mathistos, the Goblin merchant you rescued.
Mathistos: It’s good to see you all. I have a proposition.
K’un-Lun: What is your proposition my man?
Mathistos: There are some stolen goods that have not yet been cataloged.
K’un-Lun: We are on our way to do this thing right now…
Mathistos: I know you have important things to do, so whenever you can help…
K’un-Lun: Yeah, we will definitely be back.
Mathistos: We think they were stolen by this Goblin, Slogoth.
K’un-Lun: Dastardly guy, this Slogoth.
Mathistos: Yes, you’ve encountered him before. Did you kill him?
K’un-Lun: No, he got away.
Mathistos: *shows a piece of paper with a Goblin symbol* Great, great, great, the things could explode.
Professor: Oh, now you have my intention!
K’un-Lun: In that case we will be careful. I’m scared now. I mean, I’m not that scared, I am brave!
DM: Mathistos leaves you and you continue to the temple, where you are greeted by some of the priests.
Priest: How can we help you?
K’un-Lun: Have you seen a gold and a blue Dragonborn about yea high *gestures way above his head*, has very pretty chain mail, perhaps more fancy than your normal Dragonborn armor?
Priest: Are you talking about Knight Surina?
K’un-Lun: Exactly.
Professor: Yes, yes, that’s the one!
Priest: We sent her on a quest.
K’un-Lun: What quest?
Priest: We want her to retrieve the meteorite.
K’un-Lun: Which way?
Priest: We don’t know. We sent her to get a guide for the desert. I think she said something about going to the Succulent Snake to find a guide.
K’un-Lun: Alright, let’s head there to get some info.
Professor: Lead the way my man.
K’un-Lun: *leads way to the Succulent Snake*
DM: There’s the usual crowd – the bard in the center still playing, Mateen sitting off to the side, and Agatha’s bun behind the bar.
K’un-Lun: *walks over to Mateen* What up, what up, whatuuuup guy?
Mateen: Your friends just left a little bit ago. *has soup divided in to several smaller bowls*
K’un-Lun: How long ago?
Mateen: About an hour ago, I don’t know.
K’un-Lun: May I have one of those bowls of soup?
Mateen: Sure. *opens vest to show various spices* I’ll spice it however you like.
K’un-Lun: I’m down with some fish soup.
Mateen: What spices you want?
K’un-Lun: What spices you got? Pepper?
Mateen: I got that. *spices it up*
K’un-Lun: I haven’t eaten. A hero needs his breakfast. *downs the whole bowl at once*
DM: Roll a d8 (8). You are healed. Since you are already healthy you get 8 bonus points of health, but make a constitution check (7). It goes down the wrong pipe. The pepper overwhelms your senses. You get disadvantages to perception checks for half of a day.
K’un-Lun: *vigorously coughing and sniffling*
Mateen: *displeased at the coughing*
Professor: Let me have a stew of some kind.
Mateen: Sure, you guys didn’t rat me out. What kind of spice?
Professor: Parsley! No wait, Rosemary! No wait, pepper!
K’un-Lun: I don’t recommend pepper.
DM: Roll a d8 (4). You get 4 bonus health points. Make a constitution save (19). The stew goes down well. Roll dexterity (10). Not all of the soup actually makes it in to your mouth. Some of it is pouring down your mouth with your mustache acting as a strainer.
K’un-Lun: Thanks and no thanks for the soup.
Mateen: *takes out a book*
DM: Both of you roll perception (both roll low). You see him scribble something down in the book and put it away.
K’un-Lun: Anyway, do you know what direction our friends headed towards?
Mateen: I don’t know, no. I don’t notice anything. But Sable might know. *points to bard*
K’un-Lun: *turns to Professor* Your face is red.
Professor: I’m saving that for later.
K’un-Lun: *walks up to bard*
DM: She’s playing very well.
K’un-Lun: *takes out his kalimba and start improvising to Sable’s playing*
Professor: *jumps up and down waving trying to get her attention*
DM: K’un-Lun, you are playing with her beat, but you get some notes wrong. She motions to the hat on the ground with silver and gold pieces when she sees Professor jumping.
Professor: Oh, thank you! *takes a gold piece* That’s so kind of you.
Sable: *stops playing and glares at Professor*
Professor: No, that was good, keep going.
K’un-Lun: *still playing his kalimba* Why did you stop?
Sable: *hisses at Professor*
DM: Professor, make an insight check (8). She is intimidating you.
Professor: *drops coin back in to the hat*
DM: She goes back to playing, but motions at the hat again.
Professor: Clinton, what’s going on?
K’un-Lun: I was just feeling the music. I haven’t heard music in 1,000 years.
Professor: You were asleep, does it really count?
K’un-Lun: Yes. *throws gold coin in basket*
Sable: What song do you want?
K’un-Lun: Have you seen two Dragonborn and a Tiefling?
DM: She sings a little off key, her answer doesn’t go with the rhythm of her playing.
Sable: They got an Elf to guide them through the desert.
Professor: Which way?
DM: She motions to the hat again.
K’un-Lun: *throws in another gold piece*
Sable: *singing off key* They were talking about going to the meteorite, to the south.
K’un-Lun: We should get a guide.
Professor: Do you want to come with us, Able?
Sable: No.
Professor: Sable?
Sable: No.
Professor: Grable?
K’un-Lun: What if I paid you 20 gold? (Rolls persuasion, 2)
Sable: 30.
K’un-Lun: Fine, so be it.
Professor: You have yourself a deal.
Sable: Do you have camels?
K’un-Lun: Yes, we have camels.
Sable: Then let’s go. *packs up lute, motions for Mateen, who stands up and follows as well*
DM: You go towards the stables and there are camels. Surina had given them a heads up that you were coming. Roll a d6 (K’un-Lun 2 and Professor 3). K’un-Lun, you have 2 days of supplies, and Professor has 3. You start heading out and Sable… Roll perception (K’un-Lun 13 and Professor 17)… Now roll survival (K’un-Lun 24 and Professor 17). Since you both rolled high enough, you realize Sable is terrible at guiding you. She seems to have no idea where she’s going.
K’un-Lun: Hey, I was born here, I’m from here. Are we even going south right now? What are you doing?
Sable: You paid me, and I’m doing what you paid me to do.
K’un-Lun: You aren’t doing it well.
Sable: *shrugs*
DM: They don’t seem to be that competent.
Professor: We haven’t actually paid you yet, and we can pay you less.
Sable: Let me tell you story about this Goblin fellow that we were paid to lead. He went off somewhere, and we just left him.
Mateen: Uh huh….
K’un-Lun: Okay, this is weird. You guys are weird. You wanna ditch ‘em?
Professor: Yup.
Sable: At least we got free camels. *rides back towards town with Mateen*
K’un-Lun: Fine, take the camels…
DM: Each of you roll a perception (K’un-Lun 16 and Professor 11). As you’re moving along you see about 55 feet away a giant hyena that’s chomping on something. Roll animal handling if you want, K’un-Lun with advantage, Professor with disadvantage (19 for K’un-Lun, Professor rolled 11, but also rolled Nat 20). I’m going to take the Nat 20. It looks a little hurt and it’s eating something, and there’s some blood on its fur.
K’un-Lun: You want to go through this giant hyena? I don’t want to kill a dog, man.
Professor: Me either, it’s got teeth.
K’un-Lun: I mean… it’s eating so we might be okay, but still, we should go around. *tries to sneak past it*
DM: Roll your stealth, then roll animal handling (K’un-Lun rolls stealth 8, animal handling 17. Professor rolls stealth 19, animal handling 14). Now roll a d20, and you both get advantage (minus 1 for Professor). (K’un-Lun 9, Professor 4). Roll initiative (K’un-Lun 10, Professor 13) and then roll your camel’s initiate – it have minus 1 (K’un-Lun 16, Professor 2). The camel can move 50 feet (10 squares), and gets +5 to hit.
Begin Hyena Fight
K’un-Lun’s camel goes to the right, but it is interrupted after 5 squares. The hyena heard K’un-Lun and the Professor’s camel. The hyena runs towards the camel and bites its legs, doing 5 damage. The camel can either disengage or attack it back. It chooses to bite it back, but misses with an attack roll of 10.
K’un-Lun: This camel stinks.
Professor cannot move yet as it is not his camel’s turn, so he shoots Fire Bolt at the hyena. He hits with a 17 and does 3 fire damage. (Out of character Ian asks if the hyena flammable, to which Justice bluntly responds, “No.”) Next is K’un-Lun, who jumps off his camel with a heroic yell. He makes acrobatics check (21), flips off the camel and lands “epically”. K’un-Lun goes around the hyena to flank it and punches it. He hits with a 16 and does 5 damage. Next is Professor’s camel, which moves towards the hyena. The camel bites the hyena, hits with a 16 and does 2 damage. Now it’s the Hyena’s turn. It continues attacking K’un-Lun’s camel. It bites the camel and does 6 damage. The camel is very hurt, so it disengages and runs away 50 feet. Professor attacks with another Fire Bolt, hits with a 12 and does 9 fire damage. The party smells burning fur. It is not on fire, but is singed. K’un-Lun moves to flank, attacks and hits with a Nat 20. K’un-Lun gives the hyena a punch to the neck and it falls over, dead.
End Fight
Professor immediately searches its body (Rolls perception, 17).
DM: The hyena took damage before you showed up. You see the scorch marks and bruising from your attacks, but there’s matted blood that’s congealed, but is recent.
Professor: *checks what is was eating*
DM: It was a Dragonborn. (Professor roll perception, 10) He’s carrying a bloody pick ax. He’s not dressed in armor and he has some notes with him. He’s from a popped-up village based around the ruins they were excavating. The notes contain orders about going to this town where there’s more ancient ruins. He has a map and was on his way to the location when he was attacked. The map shows he was going in the same direction you were traveling, towards the meteorite. (K’un-Lun rolls animal handling to heal his camel, 24. Then rolls a d4, 3). You heal the camel 3 hp. It looks stable and its wounds are patched up.
K’un-Lun: Well, this is already where we were going. We should maybe follow this map.
DM: It’s close to evening. You will need to find a place to camp. (They decide to continue to try to find a place to sleep.) You come across an inn with some camels out front. (They tie off their camels and enter the inn.) As you go in you see the group.
K’un-Lun:*attempts to run up to them and scare them* Give me your money!
Surina: (Rolls perception 15, sees K’un-Lun running up screaming about money but recognizes him)
Cordelia hesitated about her response. She received some guided questions from Dad, who asked if she would take him seriously, laugh, or simply stand and stare. Cordelia just started giggling because her uncle was acting out his motions and couldn’t really decide on an answer.
K’un-Lun: It’s just me.
Professor: Yes, friends, we see we have caught up to you now.
*Professor and K’un-Lun start mumbling to each other about killing a dog, but it attacked first*
DM: You notice the inn is damp, and the wood is wet.
Surina: We fought a bunch of zombies.
K’un-Lun: Zombies in the desert, that my worst nightmare!
Surina: And a Spector.
K’un-Lun: Did you find anything? Any news about the meteor?
Surina: No.
Professor: Why is it so wet in here?
Lysithea: It’s not as wet as it was when we first arrived. That stupid Goblin was here.
K’un-Lun: How did he get away?
Lysithea: *recaps the story of the zombies and Goblin (see session 4)*
K’un-Lun: In other news, we found this map.
Professor: It’s true.
K’un-Lun: There’s a town nearby.
DM: It is evening. (The party decides to sleep in the inn.) The sheets are dusty, but not zombie gross. You all take a long rest. (Professor keeps watch since he is at full health and does not need a long rest. He falls asleep anyway.) Everyone roll arcana (Professor Nat 1, Surina 14, Lysithea 17, K’un-Lun 16). Professor dreams of unicorns and rainbows, and feels the dream gave him the secrets of the universe. Surina, you have the same dream as K’un-Lun and Lysithea, but you cannot interpret it. K’un-Lun and Lysithea, something in this building gave you weird visions of ghostly people. Not dead people necessarily, but like the flashbacks where people walk through things. You can’t tell if they’re dead or alive. These are possibly past events, or something happening in another location.
K’un-Lun: Did anyone have a weird dream about ghost like people walking around?
Lysithea: I had that dream.
Professor: I also had this… dream…
K’un-Lun: So I guess we all had the same dream. What do you think about that dream Professor?
Professor: Uh… I think uh… Whatever our little demon friend over here thinks.
Lysithea: This building is obviously trying to tell us something.
DM: You notice the building is no longer wet and is starting to crack apart; however, the chest is 100% in-tact.
Lysithea: *does experiment and takes chest outside*
DM: The inn starts falling apart faster. K’un-Lun, your camel is all healed.
K’un-Lun: *smacks it on behind*
DM: Really? Roll animal handling (11). The camel makes a camel sound when you smack it. (The camel is named Cammy.)
Cordelia has been off to the side wanting to participate but unsure what to do. She was slightly overwhelmed (or totally entertained) by her uncles’ characters.
The party leaves the inn come morning, taking the Spector’s chest with them. Professor infused his armor with enhanced defense, which grants armor +1. The camels are loaded with supplies, including the chest and the alchemy jug. Professor still has the magic snake bracelet that will summon a snake that is neutral and will attack whatever is closest to it. Summoning a snake is a bonus action. Lysithea still has the Staff of Bird Calls, and K’un-Lun has the Cloak of Billowing. One day’s worth of rations has been depleted. The party is about one day away from the town on the map.
DM: You are riding along through the desert. Everyone make either a wisdom-perception or wisdom-survival roll, whatever is higher. (K’un-Lun 11, Professor adjusted 20, Surina 6, Lysithea 12) You are riding along, time passes, following the map to the village with no issues. About half a day passes, it’s getting close to noon (all disadvantages are gone). Make another check (K’un-Lun 21, Professor 8, Lysithea 12, Surina 8). Octavia, roll survival (21). Off in the distance you see a sandstorm brewing. It’s about 4 minutes away, heading towards you. You can make it to the town within 30 minutes. If you travel in a fast pace you can stay about a half a minute ahead of the storm, and because of Octavia’s favored terrain bonus you don’t take penalties from fast travel. You will be hit by it, but you think you can make good time heading towards the town.
Professor: I say we hoof it!
K’un-Lun: Hoof it! *almost in sync with Professor*
Professor: Next time we should say it at the exact same time to make it more impressive.
K’un-Lun: How about we try to finish each other’s sentences?
DM: The sandstorm is about 40 miles wide. You start seeing the town, but the storm is hitting you. (Professor puts goggles down over his eyes.) Everyone make a constitution check (K’un-Lun Nat 20, Professor 21, Octavia 16, Surina 14, Lysithea 10). Lysithea and Surina roll a d10. Surina take 2 points of damage, Lysithea take 1 point of damage. Everyone but Professor make a dexterity saving throw (Octavia 8, Surina 10, K’un-Lun 16, Lysithea Nat 20). Surina and Octavia cannot see past the sand storm. Everyone else can see.
Professor: *hops down from his camel and ties them together*
DM: Enough of you can see so you make it to the town. Professor is leading the way. You make it to the town. The sandstorm is raging. If you can see make a perception check (K’un-Lun 13, Lysithea 8, Professor 10). You see some buildings, but you cannot make out what they are. You feel need to get out of the sand storm.
Professor: *ties the camels down, looks inside the closest building*
DM: Professor, roll perception (17). You see nothing happening inside.
Professor: Get off your camels! Follow the sound of my voice! Demon, go help them!
Lysithea: I have a name, you nitwit.
Professor: Get the ranger and the Dragonborn!
The party rolls a medicine check and heals Surina’s and Octavia’s eyes.
DM: There is half-normal visibility. You see a candle get picked up and lit. The candle is just floating in mid-air. (Lysithea rolls arcana, Nat 20) There is magic here, you can feel it surrounding you. You feel the sandstorm is messing with your senses a bit, but there is magic everywhere.
Dad reminds Cordelia that her character can sense Undead, and encourages her to make a religion check.
DM: (Surina rolls religion, 14.) You do not sense any Undead. The candle is moving around lighting other candles.
K’un-Lun: Who goes there foul Spector?
DM: No response.
K’un-Lun: *disappointed*
DM: This looks like a quickly built house. There is mining equipment on the wall.
Lysithea: Excuse me, may we sit down?
DM: No response, but you see a chair pull out at the table.
Professor: Oh thank you. *sits down* (Rolls arcana, adjusted 20)
DM: You feel something as you sit, as if you’re sitting within something that’s not just the chair. You get chills.
Professor: Hello there!
DM: Everyone make a DC constitution roll, but with advantage (Professor 16, Octavia 11, K’un-Lun 16, Surina 14, Lysithea 9). Lysithea, you take 3 points of slashing damage from the sand storm that is getting inside the house.
Lysithea: Owwie!
DM: You feel the storm is subsiding. It’s still going, but getting weaker.
Lysithea: We came in from the storm. Can we stay here till it subsides and I don’t get mangled anymore?
DM: No response. Professor, you feel that whatever you felt leave you, and then you feel something nudging the chair, but it doesn’t move at all.
Professor: *gets out of chair*
DM: As soon as you stand up you see the chair get forcefully pushed in, like someone was trying to give you another push. (Lysithea rolls investigation, 15) You feel this place has the same aesthetic as the dream.
Lysithea: Hey guys, this place has the same feeling as that dream we had at the damp inn.
Professor: Did you know that oats are the meaning of life?
K’un-Lun: Are you sure we had the same dream? *blows out a candle*
DM: You hear some plates and stuff jostle really quickly… and that’s it for right now. The candle gets picked up and relit. The storm subsides.
Lysithea: I feel we should inspect this town.
K’un-Lun: *opens the door and goes outside*
DM: As you open the door yourself you hear another commotion behind you. Outside you see more doors open throughout the town. This is a full, shoddy town, and there’s a huge excavation site. It’s like they built the site and quickly put up the town. There’s magic everyone, but no visible beings.
Lysithea: Something is askew. I feel as though the people of this town are between dimensions, or between realms. We can see the results of their actions, like the candles being lit, but we cannot see or hear them. Likewise, they see the consequences of our actions, like K’un-Lun blowing out the candle and opening the door… or Professor sitting on…in?…someone… But they cannot see or hear us.
K’un-Lun: Do you think they dug up something that cursed them?
Octavia: If Lysithea is right and this is a hole in dimensions, are they still actually there?
Lysithea: I think we should go check out the excavation site.
K’un-Lun: I also think we should go to the excavation site.
Dad took some time to explain to Cordelia what an excavation site is. She has been sitting patiently, not sure what to do but eager to do something. Little did we know she was planning on doing something later in the game…
Professor: Perhaps this is where that Dragonborn came from?
K’un-Lun: Oh yeah, he did have mining gear.
Professor: He was very dead. *1,000 yard stare at the ground*
DM: The storm took 2 hours. You notice tracks leading down into the excavation site, and mine carts that were used to bring things back up. This looks like it has been a major project. There’s a huge mound on top of the site, and everything else is going down into the ground. You see pieces and parts of what look like sandstone blocks on the side, and there are mining tools all around. It looks like they been used.
Professor: Here my friend, I made you something. *gives goggles to K’un-Lun* They’re Goggles of Night.
K’un-Lun: I’m actually very happy to receive this. I haven’t received a gift in 1,000 years.
Professor: As you see they’re quite fashionable.
DM: As you walk through you see lit torches. There are tracks for the mining carts. It’s basically just a straight path. Everyone roll perception (everyone rolled high enough). You hear the echoes of digging and shoveling, but see no movement. The further down you go the louder the sounds get. You see some smaller tunnels shooting off to the sides (Party stays in main tunnel). Every once in a while you see a pickaxe by itself hitting at rocks. As you pass the smaller side tunnels the sound gets louder. Once you hit the end you see this big mine cart filled with rocks, and you come to a giant, sand-brick double door with intricate designs. After inspection you realize you have seen these designs before. These designs are just like the ones you saw in the snake temple, but it’s not snakes. This door is designed with sphinxes.
Cordelia did a project on Egypt in 1st grade, so Dad had her explain a Sphinx to everyone at the table – the head of a human with a body of a lion and the wings of an eagle.
DM: There’s vignettes telling stories on each side of the double door. Roll history (Professor 12, K’un-Lun 12, Octavia 3, Surina 19, Lysithea 21). You see a few different stories. On one side there are stories of the sphinxes and people working together, with a sphinx standing over people like it’s teaching them. On the other side of the door the sphinx is roaring at the people, punishing them. You see what looks like half-people – not cut in half, but like people are disappearing. At the very bottom you see mummies being buried with the sphinx standing over.
Lysithea: So it looks like this town did something to aggravate the sphinx and are being punished, but they don’t seem aware of their predicament.
Octavia: It looks like they’re still working.
K’un-Lun: *tugs on the door* (Strength check, 6) *pulls again* (Rolls strength 17, the door is resistant at first, but then it pulls open)
DM: It’s dark in there. It looks like an antechamber to a temple. The doors were each 10 feet wide and 15 feet tall. You walk in and you see 2 doors with a rather tall statue standing next to each.
K’un-Lun: Gee I really hope these statues don’t come to life and attack us. *walks forward towards the left door*
DM: The left door looks like the door you walked through, the one with the sphinx teaching. The right door looks like the punished one. Everyone roll perception (Surina 2, K’un-Lun 21, Octavia 18, Professor 7, Lysithea 19). Things have been taken from this area. There’s dragged marks on the ground coming out of both sides, and parts of the walls are chipped away.
K’un-Lun: Perhaps they were cursed for stealing. Maybe this is a tomb.
Professor: Do you like oats?
K’un-Lun: Sure, we used to have oats all the time…
Professor: Oats are the meaning of the universe.
K’un-Lun tries to open the door, but does not open. He tries to punch door open (rolls strength, 6), but the door doesn’t budge. K’un-Lun tries the other door, which also does not open. He tries to punch it open (rolls strength 22) and the door starts crumbling a bit.
Lysithea: WHY? WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?
DM: He breaks off the locking mechanism that was there. Everyone roll initiative (Surina adjusted 20, Professor 11, K’un-Lun 11, Octavia 15, Lysithea Nat 20 +2).
Surina: *sensing Undead* There are Undead here.
Professor: Uh-oh.
DM: And those 2 things that look like statues are not really statues.
K’un-Lun: YES! I’m so happy and mad at the same time.
DM: They aren’t necessarily constructs, like they are not statues that are alive. They change a bit as if there was an illusion spell cast on them. They now look like skeletons in heavy armor.
Begin Skeleton Battle
The skeleton on the right moves to attack K’un-Lun, but misses. Lysithea uses Fire Bolt on the skeleton and hits with a Nat 20, doing 9 fire damage.
Here it is, the moment that Cordelia had been waiting for the entire session. Prepare yourself for the glory that is my child.
Surina uses her bonus action to cast Thunderous Smite on her weapon and attacks the same skeleton.
If you are not familiar with it, Thunderous Smite reads: The first time you hit with a melee weapon attack during this spell’s duration, your weapon rings with thunder that is audible within 300 feet of you, and the attack deals an extra 2d6 thunder damage to the target.
She hits with a roll of 18, doing a total of 16 damage. As her weapon strikes the entire chamber echoes with a thunderous roar. The sand on the ground becomes jostled, and the entire excavation site echoes the thunderous roar.
We had to pause momentarily for 2 reasons. One being that Dad needed to give Cordelia a science lesson about being in small room and creating a big sound. The “echo” is going to bounce everywhere. The other reason was that Dad, the DM, became thrown off, not knowing how to handle this enormous roar echoing throughout the chamber. He was very impressed with Cordelia, but now he has to come up with the reaction to her move. In his shock he said, “So, that thing is gone.”
The skeleton collapses in a pile of bones. The party starts hearing echoes of dropped tools from behind them. Lysithea theorized that the “ghost people” did not hear the thunder, but saw everything around them start vibrating for no reason. Octavia rolls to shoot the remaining skeleton with her longbow, but misses with a 12. K’un-Lun moves to the skeleton and tries to punch him, but misses with a 13. He uses bonus action to attack with his other hand and hits with an 18, doing 4 damage. Professor shoots Fire Bolt, hits the skeleton with a 19, and does 5 fire damage. Professor then moves just a little towards the skeleton, but not in anyone’s line of sight. The skeleton hits K’un-Lun with a longsword that looks pretty rusted with an adjusted 20, doing 9 damage. K’un-Lun yelps, “OW!” Lysithea misses her Fire Bolt attack with a 15. Surina moves in and swings her sword at the skeleton. She hits with a 19 and does 9 damage. It’s still up, but it is hurting. Octavia shoots an arrow with her longbow, hits with 24, and does 9 damage. The skeleton collapses in a pile of bones. The armor rusts as it falls. Professor swoops in and takes one of the rusted helmets.
End Skeleton Battle
K’un-Lun walks to the door he punched and opens it. The door opens to a hallway. Things have already been dug up and moved from this hallway. The ground itself is sand, so unlike the previous room where it is sandstone. Octavia uses Cure Wounds and heals K’un-Lun 7 HP. Party keeps same initiative. Professor tries to open the other door now that the demon is dead, but nothing happens. He rolls stone cutting (history, 18) and there is a locking mechanism, but he cannot find it. It feels like something would set it off. He then rolls investigation (21) and feels like the key to opening the door is gone. The mechanism itself is gone. He tries to use his Thieves’ Tools to open the door, but the tools do not work.
Lysithea moves towards the open door by K’un-Lun. Not wanting to fall in to a trap or sinkhole, Lysithea uses Thaumaturgy to send tremors down the hallway in an attempt to reveal anything hidden. Instead, decrepit figures begin rising out of the ground. Surina alerts the party that these are definitely Undead.
Begin Zombie Fight
Surina moves to the hallway to attack the first zombie. She hits with 16 and does 8 damage. She feels that walking in this sand makes one slower.
Victor finally decided to join the game! Draggy will be slotted after Professor. He had a lot of fun with this battle, especially when attacks against him missed.
Octavia moves in to get a visual on the zombies. She rolls a Nat 20 to attack with her longbow, and does 8 damage. K’un-Lun moves to the closest zombie and “goes for a punchy”, which hits with a Nat 20 and does 6 damage. The zombie is dead.
Dad leans in to remind Cordelia something she learned about D&D zombies…
Surina shouts, “They won’t rise if you hit them with a critical hit!” K’un-Lun uses his bonus action to move towards the next zombie and uses his Flurry of Blows, which is 2 strikes. He hits with a 15 and a 12, doing 11 damage total. Draggy moves to the same zombie, hits it with his with sword, and does 5 damage. Professor moves in to the hallway and attacks with Fire Bolt. He hits with 21 and does 2 fire damage. As a bonus action he casts arcane weapon on his hammer-hand. The zombie attacks K’un-Lun, hits with a 19 and does 3 points of bludgeoning damage. Another zombie attacks Draggy, but misses. Draggy exclaimed, “I used my shield to protect me!” Lysithea can see at least 3 of the zombies from where she is standing, so she casts Magic Missile. She does 5, 3, and 5 damage respectively. The first zombie falls, but it gets back up. Surina moves in between 2 of the zombies, and attacks the first one with her sword. She hits with an 18, does 10 damage, and kills it. The zombie fails its saving roll, so it is completely dead. Octavia moves in to shoot the next zombie, hits with a 15 and does 4 damage. K’un-Lun moves and punches the same zombie, hits with an 8, and does 5 damage. He uses a bonus action to hit again with a 21, doing another 5 damage. Draggy hits the zombie with a 13 and does 9 damage. The zombie is defeated, but it rises again. Professor moves just a little and casts Fire Bolt. He hits with a Nat 20, but does only 2 points of fire damage; however, his critical hit completely kills the zombie. The 4th zombie hits Draggy for 6 damage. The 5th zombie also attacks Draggy, but misses. Draggy again shouts, “I used my shield!” Lysithea rolls a 24 to hit the 4th zombie with Fire Bolt, doing 9 fire damage. Surina moves in and attacks the 4th zombie with her sword, hits with a 17, and does 6 damage. Octavia shoots the 4th zombie, hits with a 14 and does 7 damage, completely defeating the zombie. K’un-Lun moves to attack the final zombie with a punch, hits with an 8 and does 5 damage. He once again uses a bonus action to hit again with an 8, giving it 5 more damage. Draggy swoops in and attacks the zombie, but misses. Professor uses Fire Bolt, hits with another Nat 20, and does a total of 18 fire damage, thus defeating the final zombie. The hall is cleared!
The mystery of the cursed town has yet to be solved…
End session
Analysis: We were slightly worried about Cordelia for most of this session. She was very reserved and did not want to offer much in terms of role-playing. However, she blew us all away when she used her Thunderous Smite spell. Evidently she had been wanting to use it and felt that the armed skeleton was the perfect target to try it out on. When she rolled her attack and exclaimed, “I cast Thunderous Smite,” she almost stood up in her seat and spoke so loudly and confidently. It was a glorious moment, and we are all very proud of her. Even though she didn’t say much this time we are starting to see her become more confident with her decisions.
